Music: English Melody

Text: William W. Phelps

Arr. Gwen Edmunds

I knew our Stake President (Gingery) was going to be released at Stake Conference, and I also knew that “If You Could Hie to Kolob” was his favorite hymn.  So that’s when I decided to write the arrangement for the choir.  I was Stake Music Chairman, and directed the choirs most of the time.  What I didn’t know was that it was also the favorite hymn of the incoming Stake President (Brown).  So it became a double whammy, and of course, was well-received.

A few conferences later, a friend of mine (a baritone) and I (a soprano), sang it as a duet for Saturday evening conference.  We just improvised the harmonies to fit two voices and it worked out very well.

I have always loved this hymn’s message but also  the music as well. The problem with the hymn is that it is very lengthy, so I want to do key changes and interesting accompaniment so that a congregation would not tire of it. Plus, I wanted to build the ending and make it very dramatic, and end with a major chord for the peace that it brings.
