Music: Spanish Melody

Arr. Robert Barthel

By the summer of 2015, I found myself frequently playing at devotionals for BYU-Idaho. For preludes and postludes, I had predominantly used hymn settings right out of the book. There are some fine settings, but my yearning for something new grew irresistible, so I decided to compose my own arrangement that could be easily used in devotionals and other typical LDS services, either as prelude/postlude, or even as a musical number.

I composed the piece in sections, allowing my own input on the meaning of the text—which anticipates the joys of the Second Coming—to shape the music. No particular verse is in mind. Rather, it’s the overall mood that all three verses display. To express this felicitous mood, I include a lively eighth-note accompaniment, different harmonies, and embellishments, all of which heighten for me the music’s elation, which becomes a personal expression of joy.
