Music: Southern Harmony

Arr. Spencer Jensen

I have always felt that this hymn would work well on the double bass and would be an opportunity to address the lack of hymn arrangement options for bassists. I found inspiration in researching the origins of the tune as a derivative of one found in the old shape-note hymnbook called the “Southern Harmony”. I felt an Americana feel would be appropriate for this arrangement in respect for the early American origins of the tune and the LDS doctrine of where Adam-Ondi-Ahman is located. I also aimed to convey some of the joyfulness and reverence I felt from reading the text by William W. Phelps.
Although this arrangement is written for a bass with a C-extension, passages can be easily transposed up an octave for players who’s instruments don’t have range below the E string. A “no-low-C” part is included.
